Douglas Swimming and Diving Team Page
First off, I wanted to say welcome to the High School Swim Team. I hope to make this year fun for everyone. Having said that, I would like to remind you all that you are part of a team and that you need to treat everyone on your team with respect. This is very important, so that everyone can have an awesome swim experience this year!!
Regular season begins today, only giving us 2 weeks before our first meet. You must have 10 practices in before you can complete in a meet. I will offer practice on Saturday, March 7th, as a make-up day. That will be the only make-up day as most of our meets are on Saturdays. If you must miss a practice call/text me ahead of time to let me know and we will try to work something out. If you have pre-arranged with me that you will be missing practice for another sport practice, you will not need to make up a practice. If you are missing practice for a family event/ dr. appointment/ work that practice must be validated either by a not or by speaking with your parent/guardian and made up. Other then the one Saturday practice there will be two ways to make up a practice:
1. Come to the pool before school and swim with the Masters Swim Team.
2. If you are in Aquatics, you can make up 1 practice by attending all class periods for that week.
**Remember that any missed practice must have a valid reason for missing. Ex: “I am too tired” or “I have a lot of homework” are NOT valid reasons. ** If a practice is made up, I will need confirmation from either Coach Kat or your aquatics teacher that you did indeed make it up and that you weren’t messing around the entire time. If you miss a practice and fail to make it up, you will not compete in the following meet. That means that the day before a meet everyone should be there, because there will be no time to make up that practice before the meet.
Practices start at 2:30. I expect EVERYONE in the water no later then 2:45. That means at 2:30 you should be getting dressed and setting up the lanes. If you are not in the pool at 2:45 you will be doing push-ups. If you know you are going to be late ahead of time let me know! If you are more the 15 minutes late, and do not have a valid reason, that practice will not count.
Swim Meets
For all away meets, the school has provided transportation. All swimmers MUST ride the bus to the away meets. If the meet is during school the bus will pick up swimmers from PWL and CVMS before coming to the high school. Homeschooled students should meet the bus at the high school. For Saturday meets the bus leaves from the high school. On those days I want everyone there 20 minutes prior to bus departure time. After the meets, there is a form that needs to be filled out if you want to go home with a parent rather then ride the bus back to the high school. This form must be filled out each time, and can only be filled out by a parent/guardian.
There are a few ways that you could get disqualified (DQed) for unsportsmanlike conduct:
Jewelry- while at the meet, all jewelry must be taken off. The officials have decided that even rhinestones on fingernails are considered jewelry, so remember that when you are getting them done for Prom. If an official sees it, you will receive 1 warning. If you are seen with any jewelry after that you will be DQed.
If you are not planning on buying a team suit, you will need to check the website to make sure it is acceptable otherwise you will be DQed if your suit does not meet those requirements.
Body Art- body art can be either tattoos or writing on skin with markers. If the referee decides that you have too much body art you will be DQed. To eliminate the possibility of a judgment call, I would like for there to be NO writing on each other with sharpies or any other markers. If you are planning on getting a tattoo, I would also ask that you wait until after the season, as it will keep you out of the pool for a period of time.
The officials have also made it clear that the locker rooms are to be used. There is no deck changing permitted at any of the meets.
If you would like to place a towel on the block, you are allowed to put 1 towel. Any more then that is considered excessive.
Be behind the block the event before yours. The officials are not going to wait for you if you are not there at the 3 whistles.
When swimming backstroke, there is NO jumping into the pool. I would like everyone to do a 3-point-entrée, so the referee doesn’t have to make a judgment call on whether or not you jumped.
At every meet, parent/spectator involvement is needed. Timers will be needed to get the meet started. Without them the meet will not proceed. This year for state, they would like to make a team of volunteers to help run the state swim meet. This team will consist of one parent from each team sending a swimmer to state. That team will do the hospitality and the awards.
There are a few things that I would like to get this year:
The Spirit Award- In order to win this award the entire team will have to pitch in. That means if you are not swimming in an event, you are cheering the people on who are swimming. The team cheer, which is done before the meet starts, needs to be loud and enthusiastic. Another part of that is attending the meets in team apparel or Douglas apparel.
The Sportsmanship Award- In order to get this we
will have to do things such as: thank the hosting team for putting on the
meet, thanking the referee, scorekeeper, and officials for taking the time
to be at the meet, shaking hands or saying “
I would like to send, at least, 2 relay teams to State this year (one boys and one girls). So I will be mixing up the teams to try to find the ones that work best in the 3 different relays. Also, before Regionals, I will be talking one-on-one with those swimmers who will be competing in individual events to see where their best opportunities to make it to state would be.
